Can Beach Lights Change a Sea Turtle Hatchling’s Journey?

A natural route to the sea

On a dark nesting beach, the open horizon over the ocean provides an important visual cue for newly emerged hatchlings. They normally crawl towards the sea soon after leaving the nest. Bright buildings, roads and beach facilities can compete with that cue.

What happens when lights attract hatchlings?

Artificial light may draw hatchlings inland or cause them to circle on the sand. Extra time on the beach can increase exhaustion and exposure to predators. Lighting visible from the beach can also discourage nesting females.

Practical ways to help

Turn off unnecessary beachfront lights during nesting season. Shield and direct essential lights away from the beach, and follow local wildlife guidance for suitable fixtures. Visitors should avoid flash photography, keep their distance and contact authorised responders if hatchlings appear disoriented.
