What Does Plastic Pollution Do to Sea Turtles?

Plastic travels farther than we think

A discarded bag, wrapper or fishing line can move from streets and waterways into coastal waters. Plastic persists and breaks into smaller pieces. Sea turtles may encounter it while feeding or travelling.

Different forms of harm

Turtles can mistake plastic for food and swallow it. Fishing line and other debris may entangle them, interfere with movement or cause injury. Debris on nesting beaches can also obstruct hatchlings. The effects depend on the material, the turtle and the circumstances.

Prevention begins on land

Secure waste, reduce unnecessary single-use plastic and dispose of fishing gear responsibly. Beach cleanups help when they are organised without disturbing nests or wildlife. If you see an entangled turtle, contact trained local responders rather than attempting an unsafe rescue.
