How Do Mangrove Roots Become Nurseries for Marine Life?

Shelter in the shallows

Mangrove roots create a complex network along sheltered coasts and estuaries. Small fish and crustaceans can use the spaces among roots as shelter while they feed and grow. Tides connect these habitats to surrounding coastal waters.

Food and connections

Leaf litter and other organic material contribute to coastal food webs as they break down. The value of a mangrove nursery depends on the species present and its connection to nearby mudflats, seagrass, channels and open water. Roots alone do not tell the whole story.

A reason to conserve habitat

When mangroves are cleared or tidal exchange is blocked, the nursery habitat can change. Protecting healthy root systems and water flow supports marine biodiversity and can benefit coastal fisheries. Monitoring young animals helps reveal how a site is functioning.
