What Happens to Sea Turtle Hatchlings After They Reach the Sea?
· REEF Foundation

The first journey
After emerging from their nest, hatchlings cross the beach and enter the surf. In shallow water they swim vigorously away from shore. Waves and Earth’s magnetic field can help orient them as they move offshore. Reaching the water is a milestone, but it is only the beginning of a long journey.
Life beyond the beach
Young turtles may travel with ocean currents and spend time in floating habitats that offer food and shelter. Their routes differ among species and regions. Scientists use field observations and tracking studies to learn where they go; the early years remain difficult to observe directly.
Why protection matters
Predators, marine debris, fishing gear, vessels and artificial lights can affect hatchlings and young turtles. A clear, dark nesting beach helps them reach the sea. Protecting the ocean habitats they use afterwards is equally important. Coastal communities can reduce litter and report nesting activity to trained conservation teams.
